Residential childcare has faced decades of criticism—from traditional large children’s homes to a trend for solo provision and more recently, supported accommodation. The Global charter published in 2025 by the UK Government stated ‘young people say their experience of living in institutions “leaves lifelong challenges and we don’t want another generation to suffer the same fate”
The conference will explore the realities facing those who commission, manage, experience and deliver residential care today, asking what the sector truly needs to move forward and sharing the lessons learnt by the people in the know.

Drawing on policy developments, practice experience, and developing models, the conference intends to examine key challenges including workforce stability, leadership pressures on managers, therapeutic approaches, and the relationship between providers and commissioners. It will also reflect on the different regulatory and practice approaches across the four UK nations and consider lessons from supported accommodation three years after registration.
Ultimately, the conference aims to enable attendees to leave with practical solutions for residential services to better meet children’s needs now and in the future.
So, if you can help us to explore, inform and share evidence to consider how we support the workforce, drive policy development, deliver on lived experience lessons and develop what residential care should look like in the years ahead – please reach out?
We are aiming to confirm our schedule as soon as possible, so please contact conference@fevaca.co.uk if you are interested in joining the conversation.
